Itinerario is the title of a travel book written by Jan Huyghen van Linschoten (1563 –1611) who was a Dutch merchant, traveller and historian.
Van Linschoten was a curious and energetic traveller: My heart is longing day and night for voyages to faraway lands. (Van Linschoten)

Linschoten is credited with publishing important information about Asian trade, such as the navigational routes that enabled the passage to the elusive East Indies to be opened to the English and the Dutch. His hugely popular book Itinerario enabled the British East India Company and the Dutch East India to break the 16th century monopoly enjoyed by the Portuguese on trade with the East Indies.
The publication of the Itinerario in 1596 added the missing link to the research into itineraries and trade routes to the
Indonesian Archipelago.
An overseas trading empire was the immediate result.
